Child Poverty Rate Indicator Added to the Atlas

New Dataset
A new Child Poverty Rate indicator has been added to the Atlas at SA2 level under the 'Material Basics' theme. The indicator measures the proportion of children aged 0 to 14 years living in households below the poverty line across Australian states and territories.
The poverty line is defined as half the median equivalised household disposable income, adjusted for housing costs, consistent with the ACOSS-SPRC poverty methodology. SA2-level estimates were derived using spatial microsimulation, combining Census small-area information with unit-record data from the ABS Survey of Income and Housing.
The indicator is available for 2016 and 2021. For 2016, estimates were sourced from the 2018 Child Social Exclusion, Poverty and Disadvantage in Australia report produced by the University of Canberra, NATSEM and UnitingCare Australia. For 2021, estimates were sourced from the 2024 Child Social Exclusion Index report produced by the University of Canberra and commissioned by UnitingCare Australia.
The indicator applies to children aged 0 to 14 years and is not disaggregated by sex. For Atlas display, records are assigned an age group of 0 to 14 and a sex category of 'all'.
